And Never the Twain Shall Meet

Wufei stood outside his dorm in the early Sunday morning sun scanning the side of the building to find the window that lead to his room... to his bed. He was physically and emotionally exhausted. He entered the building and climbed the two short flights of stairs that lead to his floor. Entering the second floor hallway, he stopped and looked at the door that lead into Heero and Duo's room, wondering what his fellow pilots had been up to this weekend. Heaving a heavy sigh, he dragged himself down the hall to the corner room... the room that was his alone, and keyed the lock. He entered and dropped his shoulder pack by the door, eyeing his bed longingly. He quietly closed the door and lay down on his still made bed, fully clothed. He stared at the ceiling of his small room for a long while, going over the events of the weekend he had just been through.

So, the bastard doesn't want me anymore... well, I can live with that I suppose. It is a just dessert... a fitting end... sleeping with the enemy and all. "I am truly sorry, my dragon, but I'm afraid our little affair must come to an untimely end... a casualty of impending peace... ironic, don't you agree?" The sound of his cultured, pompous, self-important voice makes me sick now. Gah! What the hell was I thinking?! I was nothing more than a toy to him... a curiosity... a collectable... something to pass the time... a sacrificial pawn... and now I'm out of his little game. Good! I was tired of playing anyway. I don't have to lie to my fellow pilots anymore... or to myself. To hell with you Treize... good riddance. Good bye and good riddance.

"You hear me, Treize? I'm free..." Wufei uttered fiercely as he rolled onto his side and closed his eyes. "I'm free." His lips formed the words once again as he drifted off to sleep.

As Heero's eye's flickered open, he softly gasped. Duo lay in bed facing him as light from the early morning sun lanced through a separation in the drapery and struck the back of Duo's head. Duo looked, for all the world, like a real angel - his sleeping, smiling, heart-shaped face framed by shimmering, sunlit chestnut silk. He even sleeps with a smile on his face... I wonder what he dreams about. Heero raised his head to look at the clock. Too early to get out of bed... he looked at Duo's peacefully slumbering form... and every reason to stay in bed. Heero wrapped himself around the boy next to him and, with a smile crossing his own lips, fell back to sleep.

Quatre sat quietly eating his breakfast, watching his lover read the local Sunday paper. Trowa was eating while reading the funnies and a small smile would occasionally brighten his features. Quatre appreciated every smile the dark haired pilot had to offer. It had taken him a long time to make Trowa realize that there were still things worth smiling about... things worth hoping for. Buried underneath all of Trowa's doom and gloom, Quatre had discovered a passionate lover with a razor sharp intelligence and a keen sense of humor... something he really wasn't expecting... but it made him cherish these things even more. Staring out of the cafeteria window, Quatre daydreamed about the young man with whom he would hopefully spend the rest of his life... then something... or, rather, someone caught his eye. "Trowa look!"

Trowa looked up and followed Quatre's line of sight. There stood Wufei, gazing stoically up at the building. "Hm... I thought he wasn't due back until this evening."

"Me too. My God... look at him, Trowa... he looks terrible... I mean... well, you know what I mean." Quatre said, slightly flustered.

"Nnnn, he looks like he's been through hell." As Trowa said it, Wufei began to move toward the entrance to the dorm, dragging his feet. "He doesn't look hurt at all..."

"Not physically," Quatre added

Trowa caught the implication in Quatre's statement. "Your fraternal empathy never ceases to amaze me, Quatre."

Quatre glanced in Trowa's direction and briefly smiled before returning his attention to the window where he watched Wufei disappear through the front doors leading into the dorm's lobby area. He looked back at Trowa pushing his breakfast tray to the side, concern clearly showing on his face.

Trowa tried to quell the worry that was evident in the blonde boy. "I wouldn't be too concerned. Let's wait until we've had a chance to talk with him. Right now he just looks like he could use some rest."

Quatre nodded, but it was clear he would continue to fret over Wufei... unless he were distracted. "I wonder if Heero and Duo 'made it' last night." Trowa ventured.

Quatre arched an eyebrow. "What do you mean... 'made it'?"

Trowa answered with a suggestive grin.

Quatre now raised the other eyebrow. "You act as though you know something I don't."

Good... his mind is off Wufei... for the moment. "Let's just say... I provided Duo with a few... ahhh... amenities to aid in the progression of events." Trowa looked proud of himself.

"Trowa, what did you do?" Quatre asked evenly.

Trowa was a bit taken aback by Quatre's tone. Uh-oh. "I just gave Duo another bottle of brandy and some candles..."

Quatre knew better. "... aaannnnd..."

Trowa looked down at his own tray and pushed it aside. "... and a tube of lubricant."

Quatre groaned and let his forehead fall to the table with a soft thud. He sat like that for a moment rolling his head back and forth in disbelief. He raised his head and buried his face in his hands. He didn't know whether to laugh or be angry. He knew Trowa meant well, but what he had done could have caused more problems than it solved. At the same time, the look he pictured on Heero's face when Duo produced a tube of lubricant made his insides draw up as though he were being tickled. He decided to laugh into his cupped hands.

Trowa knew there was a mild scolding to follow the laughter. "Guess I shouldn't have done that, huh?"

"Trowa.... darling... you can't just go around handing out love jelly to new couples. It's... presumptuous..."

There's the scolding. Trowa looked down at his hands, ashamed.

Quatre leaned across the table a bit, "... but... I, for one, certainly hope that they got to use it."

Trowa, without moving his head, looked with surprise through too-long bangs at an evilly grinning Quatre, and smiled.

The next time Heero drifted into consciousness, he could hear the distinctive sound of Duo humming softly to himself as bare feet padded across the tiled floor. He cracked open one eye and watched as a naked Duo walked slowly to and fro, brushing the tangles from his hair. The tune Duo was humming was sweet and simple. He watched in amazement as Duo braided his hair. Within moments the young man wore his trademark tail.

"I didn't know you could do it that fast."

Duo, startled, looked at him. "What?"

"Your braid... I never realized you could create it that fast."

Duo sat on the edge of his own bed and looked across the room at Heero, saying nothing.

Heero raised up on an elbow and looked quizzically at Duo. "Something wrong?"

Duo shrugged. "I don't know... is there?"

Heero looked confused. "You mean about last night?"

"Well, we were both drunk last night... I just didn't know if yummmf... !!!"

Heero was across the room with his mouth plastered across Duo's before he could even finish the sentence. After several long moments, Heero decided to let Duo breath again. "I'm not drunk now, Duo... my Duo," he whispered hotly into Duo's ear. "Are you?"

"N... No." Duo's voice rattled along with his body as he lay back, pulling Heero on top of him. He drew Heero's mouth to his own and kissed him with all the passion he had. Any doubts he may have had quickly slipped away as Heero matched his intensity.

Heero withdrew from the kiss. "Duo..." he said breathlessly, "... if we don't stop this now... we'll be late for lunch." Heero began moving his hips, imitating Duo's movements from last night.

"Yes, and if you remember correctly we had to wait for them yesterday. Like you said to me... what's good for the goose..." Duo's hot mouth traced a line from Heero's chin to his ear.

Heero reluctantly wrenched his head from Duo's attentive lips. He stood, looking into Duo's slit eyes. "You know, this morning I was watching you sleep," Heero said panting, "and I could have sworn you were an angel... but now, I'm not so sure."

Duo smiled at the stunning naked pilot standing before him when inspiration suddenly struck him. He quickly sat up and swallowed Heero to the root.

Heero gasped with surprise and his knees almost buckled. "Ohhhhh ffffuck!"

Duo was ravenous in his assault as he sucked hard and fast, not even giving Heero time to think about moving away. It wasn't long before he could feel Heero's thighs shuddering...

... And Duo's mouth was gone. Heero opened his eyes and looked down. Duo was gone! He looked quickly around the room and found Duo pulling a towel from his closet. "What the hell are you doing?!"

"I'm going to take a shower," Duo said with feigned innocence.

"Not until you finish what you started!" Heero growled, not unkindly.

"Oh, I'll finish, Heero... rest assured... I - will - finish..." Duo gave him a very wicked look. "... later, when we have more time..." Duo came closer, unbridled sexuality in every movement. "... I just wanted to give you something to think about until then." Duo leaned in and kissed Heero on the neck.

Heero reached out and pulled Duo's nakedness tightly against his own. "Are you trying to drive me crazy, Duo?!"

Duo looked into Heero's deep blue eyes and thought about that for a moment. He chuckled as he pulled away, wrapping the towel around his waist and heading for the door. Duo looked wistfully over his shoulder. "No, Heero..." he said softly, "... I'm trying to keep you sane."

Duo was gone for several long moments before Heero could move or think again. He can be so deep sometimes. I understand him, though. Heero started a bit as he pulled a towel from his own closet. Gah! I actually understand him. Now there's a thought I never thought I'd think. Heero shook his head, chuckling at his own mind's words. He is just trying to keep me focused on him. He knows he is my link to life... he knows I couldn't... he knows I wouldn't live without him if the war were to end. Heero gasped. The war!? I haven't even thought about the war in the last twenty-four hours!! Heero looked at the clock. Correction... twenty-three hours fifteen minutes. He glanced at his desk where his closed laptop sat. He walked over to it and reached out to open it with one hand. He typed in several codes and waited with his eyes closed, holding his breath. A beep told him his messages were available for viewing. Heero barely pried his eyes open...'no new messages' was all the screen read. Heero let out a sigh of relief as he closed the laptop. What will I do when it doesn't say that... what will I do if and when there is another mission? What happens to Duo and I?

Heero worried as he made his way to the shower.

After Heero and Duo dressed for lunch, the two sat on Heero's bed, talking softly to one another.

"Duo, I can't believe I'm about to say this... but I actually had fun last night. I enjoyed the company of my... my friends, I enjoyed brushing out your hair and dancing with you, and... well... I enjoyed everything about last night. It's was the best night of my whole miserable life."

Duo snickered. "Don't be so down, Heero... it gets better!"

Heero smiled briefly.

Duo sat forward so he could see Heero's face. "You are worried about something though, no?"

Heero just nodded.

"Let me guess... you're worried about what will happen to us if this war starts up again."

Heero looked at Duo, utterly astonished by the boy's ability to read his mind. How the hell does he do that?!

Duo shrugged. "Heero, worrying about it now isn't going to do either one of us any good. As far as missions go, I don't expect any special treatment in the assignments I get. It will be business as usual, I expect that of you... and you expect that of you. Don't compromise yourself on my account. We have a job to do... a mission."

Heero stood and shoved his hands into his pockets. "That's the problem, Duo! I'm not clear on what my mission is anymore!" Heero was clearly agitated.

Duo looked quite shocked at that statement. "It's the same as it's always been."

"No! No it's not! Don't you see, Duo..." desperation crept into Heero's voice as he spoke very softly now, "... you are my mission now."

Duo sat for several seconds with his mouth hanging open before clamping it shut. He thought for a long time before speaking again. "Heero, you can consider that particular mission... accomplished." Duo reached out and pulled the confused boy to sit next to him again, wrapping his arms around Heero's waist. "Heero, you can't be so single minded. I know this is difficult for you, but you have to separate our job and our relationship. Not doing so... could be lethal to one... or both of us. You do what you have to do and I'll do what I have to do - and when it's all over... then we can screw like rabbits."

Heero jerked his head up to find Duo grinning at him. He looked from one of Duo's huge eye's to the other several times before smiling himself.

Duo continued, serious once again. "There will be quiet times... sometimes only a few hours... but I would like to spend those times with who - you - are - now." Duo punctuated each word with passion.

Heero nodded his understanding. "I can't promise that I can turn it on and off like that, Duo... "

At that moment, Trowa stuck his head through the partially open door.

"Good morning, Heero," Trowa said with a questioning grin on his face.

"Hey, Trowa, come on in!" Duo bounced as he unwrapped his arms from around Heero's waist.

Trowa pushed the door open and Quatre followed him into the room. Both boys sat across the small room on Duo's bed.

Everyone had the silliest grin plastered on their faces.

Duo looked at Quatre. He could tell by the flushed complexion that Quatre suspected what had transpired last night. He looked from Quatre to Trowa to Heero several times. They all just sat there smiling at one another not saying a word. Duo couldn't stand it anymore. "Oh, for Christ's sake people, let's just get this out in the open." Duo pointed at Heero who had opened his mouth to say something. "And don't try to stop me." Duo turned his attention to Trowa. "Trowa, I would like to say thank you. You have the foresight of a fortune teller. We made very good use of all the items you provided us last night." Duo crossed his arms and smiled at a slightly blushing Heero.

Quatre gasped, clapping his hands together once and lacing his fingers together under his chin. "That's wonderful!"

Heero's blush deepened as all eyes turned to him, but his smile did not fade. "I'm ravenous..." he said looking pointedly at Duo then back at the others "... let's eat." Heero stood to leave.

Duo winked as the other two boys looked at him for confirmation of their suspicions.

As they made their way down the stairs, Quatre stopped. "I almost forgot... Wufei is back. He got in very early this morning."

Duo grinned widely. "WoooooHooooooo! Wu-chan!" Duo's voice echoed in the stairwell. He practically trampled the other three boys as he ran back up the stairs. They could hear Duo chanting 'Wu-chan' over and over as he almost ran to Wufei's room. All three remaining boys looked at one another and rolled their eyes before chasing Duo back to where he would undoubtedly be pounding on Wufei's door.

Before they even rounded the corner into the hallway, they could hear Duo's clenched fists trying to beat Wufei's door down. "Wu-man! Wake up! Come out and play! Time to eat!"

As the other three boys neared, the door to Wufei's room suddenly flew open, revealing a very bedraggled and aggravated looking Wufei. "Damn it, Maxwell! Can I not have a moment of peace?!"

"Hey, Wufei, no need to get so upset man... 'sides, it's almost noon." Duo flashed his most congenial smile. "Wanna go to lunch?"

Wufei noticed the other three boys coming up behind Duo as Quatre waved slightly. Wufei nodded to them and looked back at the smiling, energetic, braided boy. He just couldn't be angry right now... he just didn't have the energy. "Duo, really, although I do appreciate the offer, I am not terribly hungry right now, I am exhausted, and, as I am sure you can see, I am not all that presentable." At that very moment, Wufei's stomach growled loud enough for all to hear.

The three boys in the back row couldn't help but smile.

Wufei immediately noted the slight smirk on Heero's lips. Is he smiling!?

"Well, Wufei..." Duo said, grinning ear to ear, "I suggest you wipe the sleep out of your eyes, put on something a little less wrinkled, and listen to your tummy."

Quatre giggled.

Although Heero was looking at the floor, Wufei's attention was focused entirely on Heero's face. "Give me a few minutes to change."

Duo snorted as the door closed in his face. "Well, that was easy."

"I think I might know what convinced him." Trowa nodded toward Heero, who's eyes were still focused on the floor.

"I don't get it," Duo admitted.

Quatre rolled his eyes. "He's smiling, Duo."

Heero's head shot up when the realization hit him, the smile... gone. "I almost forgot... he knows nothing of what's happened this weekend."

"His nose will bleed for a month when he finds out." Duo covered his mouth and laughed softly.

Heero looked evenly at Duo. "He's not going to find out, Duo."

"Why not?!" all three asked simultaneously.

Heero shrugged. "I just don't think he would be very... accepting of the situation."

"Heero that's not fair!" Duo complained. "You have no idea how he'll react. Besides, I wouldn't have the joy of seeing his nose explode and his chin hit the floor."

Quatre cleared his throat. "Actually, you're both wrong." He paused and glanced at Trowa for a moment. "Wufei's known about Trowa and I for almost six months now."

"Six months? And you didn't even tell us?!"

"Duo... we've been through this," Trowa warned.

Duo bit off and swallowed any further complaints. "Soooo... was he ok with it?"

"Actually he said he knew that it would happen..." Quatre explained, "... he said we belong together."

"He said that?" Duo queried.

Trowa nodded. He looked hesitant for a moment. "He also said... the same thing about you two." The last few words came out in a rush.

It was Heero and Duo who's chins were on the floor as Wufei came out of his room and joined them. "I am ready."
