::end of part 1::
Duo never saw the broken board coming. How could he, when the waves acted perfectly as walls to block his sight? How could he, when he was barely conscious from exhaustion? All he felt was something hard striking him in the back of the skull before the world went black.

Of the Sea part 2
by NoirAnge

Duo woke with an enormous headache, feeling like a fish washed up on the shore. For some reason, it was very dry and whatever he was lying on wasn't very comfy. At least it was warm... He opened his eyes a crack, and.. now that's strange.. warm sand, bright light. Eyes opening a little wider, he noticed that he wasn't quite under the water. Well, that could explain the dry feeling and why it was so warm and bright. Duo just wasn't awake enough to fully process this information. //Now, how to get back in the water.. finding it first sounds like a good idea.//

Sitting up, he was confronted with an eyeful of the big blue. Well, that wasn't hard... Curious, he looked around some more. He might as well enjoy it there while he could. He could smell the salt air, it smelled almost like home. The sand was sticking to his skin and some of it had worked under his scales and into his hair. Remembering that his hair was loose and not in a braid, he groaned. It would take hours to untangle, and the he had to get all of the sand out of it too. He noticed that the crown he had made was gone, it must have fallen off sometime..

The beach he was on was strewn with shells, dead seaweed, and various pieces of driftwood. Crawling over to look at some of the shells and driftwood, he decided that fins were just not made for maneuvering on land. He understood exactly why merfolk didn't make a habit of coming up here. The wood certainly had some interesting shapes though. One of the pieces looked like it had broken off of something. //Wonder what that could have been, out in the middle of the ocean.//

Then it struck him. The boat, the storm, the lightening. And that man... //Oh, no! I don't know how I managed to get here, but if that man didn't...// Turning his head to survey the beach, he noticed a piece of so-called driftwood that looked decidedly human. A piece of so-called driftwood that looked amazingly like the prince from the ship. As he crawled and prayed his way over to the prince, it was more and more apparent that this guy just hadn't made it. "Oh jeeze," he muttered to himself, "he's gotta be alive. I didn't do all that work just for him to die on me like this. Where's the justice in this world?" (1)

//Please be alive, please be alive!// Duo didn't see the chest rising, and for a moment he was sure the prince was dead. Stubbornly, he refused to accept it. He wouldn't believe it. He couldn't believe it.. Leaning over, he put his ear on the prince's chest. Was that... yes. A heartbeat. Elated, Duo could barely suppress the urge to cheer. The prince, Heero, that was his name, the prince was alive!

He still wasn't conscious, though. //At least this way,// Duo thought, //I'll be able to get a good look at him. No telling what he'll do when he wakes up with a merman next to him.// Upon closer examination, Duo decided that Heero's face was quite handsome. Somehow, the mop of unruly hair atop the prince's head suited him. Absently, Duo began to hum the song he had sung the previous night as he looked around the beach, waiting for the prince to wake up. After a little while, he started to sing it softly. It was not long after that the prince's eyes fluttered open, catching Duo's attention.

Duo continued to sing as he gazed into the uncomprehending eyes before him. They were the deep blue of the sea at twilight, and absolutely beautiful. Duo couldn't tell if it had been minutes or hours when he was startled out of the trance by a shout.

"Hey Sandy, wait up!"

Looking up, Duo saw a very hairy, four-legged creature racing toward him. Looking back at the prince, and once again at the yellow-haired monstrosity getting closer and closer by the second, he decided now was as good a time as ever to go back under the waves. With a splash, he was under and swimming for home.

Heero awoke to the sound of gentle singing and waves whispering on the sand. He opened his eyes, but his vision was blurred. All he could make out was a vaguely outlined face surrounding two deeply colored eyes, gazing at him. Unable to think clearly, he just gazed right back, the sweet song echoing in his ears. It ended abruptly as he heard a someone shout. Then he heard a splash, and looked over as a dog came running toward him, followed by a boy with blonde hair.

He sat up slowly, and was rewarded with an aching head. Rubbing the back of his skull with his hand, he looked up as the blonde boy came over and knelt next to him.

"Hey, are you okay?" he asked.

"I've been better." was Heero's reply.

"Here," the boy said, offering his hand. Heero took it and was hauled unceremoniously to his feet. "I'm Quatre, ad this is my dog Sandy. I live about two miles away from here, do you think you can make it?" Heero nodded and started after the boy, the dog walking companionably at their sides. "I live here with my father and sisters," the boy started. "I'm sure I can get you some help once we reach my home..."

Duo sat on a stone in the garden, relating his experience of the world above the waves, as Lylie sat behind him attempting to brush out his hair.

"Really, Duo, how did you get your hair so tangled? I don't think I'll ever get all the knots out."

"Well," Duo replied, "if you would let me finish the story, you'd know why my hair is so messy. As I was saying, one of the streaks of light hit the mast of the ship. I think.. I think it was fire that was eating the sails, but I'm not sure. The sailors were all terrified. The waves were huge, and after a while they just smashed the boats to bits. That's when I saw the prince sinking. I kept him afloat for a while, but something hit me in the back of the head and knocked me out. I woke up on the beach and found the prince there too..." Duo trailed off as he remembered looking into those beautiful blue eyes. They were so.. so...

"And?" demanded Lylie, eager for Duo to continue, "You gonna keep talking?"

"Oh, yah," Duo replied, startled. "Well, after a little while, this thing with a ton of hair came running at me and I decided it was time to come home."

"Wow," Lylie said. "That's so cool. Your first time and you got to rescue a prince... Was he handsome?" Duo nodded, thinking about just how handsome the prince had been.

"Oww!!" He exclaimed. "What'd you do that for?"

"Well, silly head, you're the one who got your hair in this mess. Don't blame me if it's got knots the size of whales."

"Hmph," Duo replied, scowling.

The next couple of weeks, Duo had gone daily to the place where he had left Prince Heero. He hadn't seen the boy there once. He had gone up and down along the shore, and even saw a house with that same, hairy yellow thing running around hear it. But the prince wasn't there. Duo was beginning to get quite frustrated.

"What's wrong?" Lylie asked, approaching him. Duo turned his head and smiled at his little sister.

"Who, me? Aw, it's nothing. So, what are you up to?"

"Wondering what you've been thinking about for the past three hours. You've been sitting in this same spot," she said, pointing at the rock that was currently serving as a chair, "and you've barely moved a muscle the whole time. Sure, you've turned your head a couple times to look at something different, but really. Three hours of being in the same spot is something I have never see you do."

Duo was looking somewhat uneasy after this little speech. He looked away from his sister guiltily and said, "Well, I guess I've been thinking about that night and the shipwreck."

Lylie was confused as well as concerned. "For three hours? Did those people's deaths really bother you that much? I mean, you didn't even know them-"

"No, not that. I'm not happy those people died or anything, I was just thinking about the prince. I was wondering where he went, cause.. ever since then I haven't seen him at all."

"Oh..." Lylie replied, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "I think my brother's got a crush on a human..."

Duo looked up sharply. "What? What are you talking about? Me, like the prince?? Let me remind you, not only is he human, he's a guy."

"So?" Lylie shrugged. "There's nothing wrong with being gay."

"What?! Are you saying that I'm GAY?!?" She nodded.

"But.. but.. how can.." Duo sputtered. Lylie just laughed.

"Come on," she said. "Let's go talk to Wufei. He knows all about humans. Maybe he can help us." She grabbed Duo's hand and pulled him, sputtering all the way, to the palace library.

Wufei looked up to see Lylie dragging what looked like a very reluctant Duo towards him and stifled a grin. He wasn't sure exactly why they were coming here, but it promised to be quite fun with Duo so uncomfortable.

"Wufei?" Lylie ventured. "We have some questions. We know you know a lot about humans, and we were wondering if you could help us."

Wufei looked at Duo, who looked like he might bolt at any second. "Okay Duo, what does this have to do with you?"

"Ah, well, you see," Duo began, "there's this prince who almost drowned in this shipwreck, but I kind of saved him, and now I don't know where he is, and I was just hoping you could help me, but ah, you look kinda busy, so, I'm gonna go-"

"Oh, no you don't," said Lylie as she caught his wrist. "You've been moping about this way too long and now you're gonna get some help." Turning to Wufei, she continued, "Sorry, he's just nervous cause he likes the guy and he doesn't want anybody to know cause for some reason he thinks it's bad to be gay."

"I am not!"

"Oh hush."

"Hush yourself!" Lylie just rolled her eyes as Wufei sat back, watching everything with a very bemused smile on his face.

"Gay? I never would have thought." Wufei couldn't help it, it was just too much. Any chance to tease Duo, and he was there. Duo just glared at him.

"Okay, you two," Lylie said, stepping in. "Are you gonna help us or not, Wufei?"

"Well, if you want me to help you find him, I need a name," Wufei stated.

"Heero," Duo offered.

"What's his family name?"

"Uh.. I never got that.. " replied Duo, uneasy.

"I still might be able to help you, it just may take a little longer..." Pulling out a book, he opened it and flipped through a couple pages. Pointing, he said, "Here's a map of the kingdoms bordering this sea. I'm guessing the kingdom your prince is from is either this one, this one, or that one." Getting another book out, he scanned the pages and found what he was looking for. "Here, it says: Prince Heero Yuy, heir to the kingdom of Andor." Looking at the map again, he pointed to the kingdom all the way on the left. "This is Andor, and this dot here on the coast is where the capitol is, with the castle where Heero must live."

"There?" asked Duo. He picked up the book, scrunched his eyes, flipped the map over a couple of times, and studied if for a bit. "Right there?" he asked again. Wufei nodded. "Great, let's go!" Duo exclaimed as he dropped the book and grabbed Wufei's hand, pulling him out of the library. "Bye sis! Sorry, but you can't come on this one, it's to the surface. Thanks for the help, I'll catch you later!"

"Why do you have to bring me along?" protested Wufei.

"Why? Because I have no idea what those maps mean! You're gonna have to show me!" Duo replied, thrilled that he was finally going to be able to see the prince again. (2)

(1) i know i know.. thats a wufei thing. i just couldnt help myself... it was too perfect.
(2) ok, Duo doesnt know how to read a map. but i have justification for that.. way back when when this story is taking place, very few people got a good education, even royalty. only scholars (such as Wufei) knew how to read, write, and other such scholarly things. so. i have an excuse.

whew.. ::rubs fingers:: ive never typed that fast before in my life.. all to please you, of course, because ive gotten *many* requests to continue. ::glomps everyone:: thank you so much for reading my fic, it means the world to me that somebody's enjoyiong it. as for the next part, im going to be *very* busy, so *hopefully* i can get it out by the end of the week.. but thats hoping >.<
