[I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don't let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories]

"I hope you boys understand why this must be done," Sally Po said.

Both Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell had been called almost an hour before hand, and now they sat in a large, empty, white room. The chairs were uncomfortable and stiff, the room was hot; all and all, they wanted to get this over with.

"What about the other guys?" Duo asked. He was nervous. Very nervous. /It's better this way,/ he thought sadly.

"Trowa and Quatre went through the procedure last week. Wufei is scheduled a week after you two," Sally explained. "It takes a week to prepare for such a complicated task. We believed that it should be done in pairs, so you would not feel alone. Wufei can deal with it, though," she smirked, "he's a stubborn guy."

"He agreed?" Heero asked. He hadn't spoken since the pair arrived. Heero seemed almost lost in his thoughts, maybe even a little sad.

"Yes, Heero, he did." Sally's face fell. "He said that he did not want to remember the pain and sorrow anymore."

Heero just nodded.

"Well!" Duo piped up. "Let's not keep the good doctors waiting!"

Sally gave him a sad smile. "Yeah," she said. "I'll leave you two boys alone now to change. There are two rubber bodysuits in the corner over there that you'll have to wear. We are using radiation, so this will insure safety. The doctors will explain the rest." She turned to leave, stopping at the door. Looking back, she said, "I'll miss you two. You've been dear friends to me." Then she was gone.

The room was silent after that, save for the rustling of clothes as the boys changed. Duo was down to his black, smiley face boxers and about to step into the bodysuit when Heero spoke up. "I wanted to tell you something before the procedure," he said, zipping up the front of the bodysuit. Duo couldn't help but admire how snugly the suit fit Heero's body; how it clung to every curve, every muscle…

Duo licked his lips and nodded, mouth suddenly dry, waiting for Heero to continue. Heero walked up to him, placing his hands on Duo's shoulders. He paused, taking a deep breath, eyes closed in concentration. Then, suddenly, Heero's lips were on Duo's, softly, tenderly, kissing him. Duo could only stand there intelligently, shocked. "Forgive me for not asking permission first, Duo," Heero said, lips still dangerously close to Duo's, "But I've been in love with you ever since you shot me that day we met."

"Hee-" Duo tried, but found his throat constricting on the verge of tears. He instantly collapsed into Heero's arms, sobbing against the strong shoulder. Duo let his tears flow freely. How could Heero do this to him? How could he? Right before they were going to –

"I love you too!" Duo cried, and he crushed his lips to Heero's; desperately kissing the boy he'd only dreamed of touching, pouring all of his love and passion into the kiss. "How could you do this, Heero? How could you do this to me…" Duo said, tears still falling down his face. "I've loved you for so long, and now… we have less then a half hour left together."

Heero held Duo closer. "I never meant to hurt you. I'm so sorry, Duo…"

Duo blinked wide violet eyes up at his love. "Do you think we'll ever meet again..?"

"I'm sure of it. I love you, there has to be a way for us to be together…" Heero walked over to his discarded clothes and pulled out his ID card from his pants. He handed the card to Duo. "Keep that… perhaps it will lead you to me one day." Duo held the laminated card to his chest as if it were the most precious thing in the world.

"It's probably the only chance we have…" Duo kneeled down and fished out his own ID card from his black jodhpurs, standing up again and handing it to Heero. "Take mine, too," he said.

"I'll never lose it," Heero promised. Duo frowned. "How will we keep the others from taking the ID cards from us?" Heero looked at Duo, then smiled.

"Put on your suit. I think I know a way," Heero said. Duo beamed and quickly pulled on the rubber bodysuit, falling over a few times in the process, much to Heero's amusement. Duo zipped up the front of his suit and turned to face Heero. "I'm ready, Heero," he said, slipping his arm around Heero's. Heero nodded. "Alright. Let's go. I know where they're keeping our new stuff for after they erase the memories. We can just put the ID cards in there."

Duo grinned at him. "Heero, you're perfect. I love you." Heero smiled and gave his braided love a kiss on the lips before sneaking out the door. They had very little trouble finding the room without getting caught. Heero quickly slipped the IDs into the appropriate bags while Duo kept watch. It felt like just another mission to Heero, and he was determined not to fail.

They hurried back to the changing room, and just as they were about to kiss again, the door flung open, and Duo jumped guiltily, glomping onto Heero's arm. The doctor blinked at them, "I hope I'm not interrupting anything… but I've come to tell you that we're ready to do the procedure."

Heero nodded, "alright."

Heero and Duo followed the doctor in silence down the long, white hallway, occasionally casting shy glances at one another. In only a few minutes, they would be strangers. They would be normal boys, going to a normal school, and leading a normal life. They will have no recollection of being former Gundam pilots, or of the war they fought so hard to win. However, these memories were not the ones worrying the boys the most.

They wouldn't remember each other.

At the end of the hallway, Duo and Heero were instructed to go into different rooms. This would be the last they ever saw one another. They paused, staring at each other, hoping desperately that if they stared long enough, they wouldn't forget. The two lovers shared a long, tender kiss before parting silently. No words needed to be said. They wouldn't be remembered come morning.

That day, the memories of Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell were erased.
