/Fly, fly little wing
Fly beyond imagining
The softest cloud, the whitest dove
Upon the wind of heaven's love
Past the planets and the stars
Leave this lonely world of ours
Escape the sorrow and the pain
And fly again./

Heero ran as fast as his legs could take him. The silent battlefield was mocking him, he was sure of it. He seemed to be running in place, covering no ground at all. Nothing, however, mocked him more then the scene ahead. He stopped suddenly, almost toppling over, tripping over his own feet. This couldn't be happening to him. It was unreal. Impossible! But there he was, a hand clutching at his blood soaked chest, braid partly unraveled, and violet eyes shut. One of the beautiful eyes cracked open, and a weak smile spread across the wounded boy's lips. "Saa, Heero, coming to my rescue?" He joked. Heero couldn't speak. He walked over to the boy's side, kneeling next to him. "D… Duo. What happened?" Duo smirked, then coughed a little. "The God of Death can't run too fast, I guess. Che, shot in the… in the back." Duo struggled to respond, pained when he talked. Heero lifted Duo up into a sitting position, supporting him in his arms. "I'm sorry, Duo. It's my fault. We didn't notice you fell behind when we were escaping… we couldn't return until we killed everyone else…" Heero trailed off, suddenly ashamed and angry with himself, the realization that Duo's wounds were because he didn't keep check on his comrades. "Naw it ain't your guys' fault. The God of Death always goes unnoticed! Even in the end…"

"Duo…" Heero whispered, brushing Duo's bangs from his face. His eyes traveled down to Duo's hand, and he gently lifted it from his chest. He turned away and shut his eyes tightly, willing himself not to cry. It was too late. There was nothing he could do.

/Fly, fly precious one
Your endless journey has begun
Take your gentle happiness
Far too beautiful for this
Cross over to the other shore
There is peace forevermore
But hold this mem'ry bittersweet
Until we meet./

"Aw, Heero. It ain't as bad as it looks, really!" Duo grinned and chuckled, but ended up coughing violently. He turned his head to the side and spit. Blood. Unconsciously, Duo's hand blindly sought out Heero's, and clasped it tightly. Suddenly, he was very, very afraid. "Hmm… well, Heero, even the God of Death can be wrong, I guess…" He looked up at the boy who held him, giving a lopsided grin. Heero glared, holding Duo's hand tighter. "Stupid…" Heero choked out, "Liar! You always said… you never lie… that Death can't die… and that you'd always… always…" He bit back the last part of what he wanted to say, too overwhelmed with emotion. "Always be with you…" Duo finished for him. "And I will, Heero… as long as you don't forget me. I'll always be with you." Duo smiled at him, brushing a hand over Heero's lips. "Saa, Heero… it's… kinda hurtin'… kiss it and make it better?" Duo grinned. Heero leaned down and kissed his lover's sweet lips softly. When he opened his eyes again, Duo was gazing at him with a pained look. As if reality of the situation had finally taken it's toll on him. "I… don't wanna go yet, Heero…" Duo said, a hot tear falling down his cheek. Heero shivered, fear and sadness taking over his body. "I know, Duo… I know… I… there's nothing I can do… I'm sorry…" Another tear fell down Duo's cheek. "I love you, ya know…" Heero shut his eyes, grinding his teeth together. "No… no, don't say your good-byes now! Not yet! There's… there's still some time… not yet…"

"Heero, I'll see you again someday, right? Won't I?" Heero opened his eyes again and looked down. "Yeah… we'll be together again someday… I promise…" He held Duo closer, never wanting to let go.

/Fly, fly do not fear
Don't waste a breath, don't shed a tear
Your heart is pure, your soul is free
Be on your way, don't wait for me
Above the universe you'll climb
On beyond the hands of time
The moon will rise, the sun will set
But I won't forget./

"I'm… kinda scared… what'll happen on the other side..?" Duo forced out, his throat burned when he spoke. Heero didn't answer his lover, but leaned down and rested his cheek on Duo's head. Duo shuttered in his grasp, and shut his eyes tightly. More tears began to stream down his face. "It's… getting kinda hard to see…" He whispered. "Shhh…" Heero moved to look at Duo's face, stroking away his tears with his thumb. "Everything will be okay…" But Heero knew, deep in his heart, this would forever change his life. Never before had he imagined his life without Duo in it. Duo meant more then the world to him, but now… now none of their dreams would be met. Never again would Heero wake up, holding his sleeping lover in his arms. He'd never hear that joyous laughter, never see that sweet smile, and never gaze into beautiful violet eyes. All his memories of Duo would be painful to remember, but more beautiful then life. Heero stroked the side of Duo's face softly with his thumb, until pained eyes opened again to look at him. "I love you, Duo. Always…" They stared at each other, both seeing the pain and love in each other's eyes, but both understood.

"You'll always be mine, Duo… and I'll always protect you, even when I can't be by your side…" Duo smiled up as his love, a few more tears escaping his eyes, and then he closed them. They would never open again.

/Fly, fly little wing
Fly where only angels sing
Fly away, the time is right
Go now, find the light./

Heero held him into the night. In the morning, his lover would be buried, but he knew that Duo would always be there. Watching him from above, with a pair of beautiful, angelic wings.

End.
