Occupants: Duo, Howard, and Heero

Hiding his pain, as well as ignoring it, Heero had made his way to the room that Duo was staying in. Carefully he peeked his head through the door and saw that Duo was lying peacefully with his eyes shut. He wasn't sure if the other boy was asleep or not, so he came in as quiet as he could.

Just then, Howard came out of the little bathroom that was next to the door. He came up from behind Heero and placed a hand on his shoulder. Heero nearly jumped out of his skin at the sudden touch.

"Whoa! Settle, Heero. It's just me."

Heero narrowed his eyes, "How did you get behind me without me knowing?"

Howard shrugged, "Beats me. I just came out of the bathroom."

"You weren't stalking me?"

"No. Why would I do that? I was just walking the way I usually do."

"You're awfully quiet for an old guy."

Howard grinned at the compliment.

"And you're noisy for a trained killer." Came the reply from the bed. Heero turned his head over to give the bed-ridden boy a glare.

Howard laughed, "He got you there, Heero. Hey, Duo, I have to go down to the lobby for a while. I'll catch ya later?"

"Yeah. I suppose. I think Heero wants to talk to me anyways. See ya, Gramps."

Howard smiled wide, "Gramps… I like that. I wonder if I'll ever get used to it." He sighed. Just before he walked out, he placed a hand on Heero's shoulder and told him, "You be nice to my grandson now, you hear me?" Then he winked at Duo and walked out.

Duo chuckled, "That's Howard for ya. I hope he doesn't change. Hey, Heero, come sit by me. You wanted to talk to me, didn't you?"

Heero moved slowly and soundlessly to Duo's side and sat down. "I was told that you were doing better and that I was allowed to see you."

"Oh, is that all?" Duo cocked his head to the side and gave Heero a lope-sided grin.

Heero shied away, but Duo couldn't tell why he turned his head. There was a slight awkward pause between them before Heero finally spoke.

"I was told…" Heero whispered, "That you like me."

Duo's eyes flew open, and then he coughed into his fist, "Well, of course I like you. You're my best friend."

Heero turned back to look directly into Duo's eyes. "Yeah?"

Duo nodded, feeling his stomach flip-flop, "Yeah."

Awkward silence again.

"You'll be able to rest at home soon." Home was what they called their recent hideaway. Duo nodded at this, thinking of what he should say next. This was the first time in a long time that they had talked in private.

"When?" Duo finally decided to say.

"You have to stay in bed for about four weeks."

Duo sighed, "That doesn't sound like fun to me. I'll get bored."

"Well, it's either that or risk getting yourself killed."

"So when hasn't this stopped me?" Duo smirked.

Heero sneered, "I'm serious, Duo."

"How serious?" Duo raised an eyebrow.

"As serious as a heart attack."

"Oh. That serious."

Heero sighed, gingerly placing a hand on top of Duo's covered knee, "Just make sure you get better. We need you."

"WE need?"

"Yeah, you're a great asset to our team."

"What about what you need?" Duo narrowed his eyes.

"I need…? I don't know what you're talking about." Heero stood up.

Duo groaned inwardly, "Probably don't."

Heero turned his head back swiftly and glared, "I guess coming here was a mistake."

Duo glared back, "Yeah, whatever buddy. You seemed to be actually trying to get along with me and stuff, seeing's how you're my `best friend' and all. I guess I was wrong."

Heero sighed, "Well, if it makes any difference at all… I like you too."

"You sure don't act like it sometimes."

"I just…" Heero bit his lower lip as he halted his sentence. "I have to go." Heero ran out the door. Or `hobbled' as the case may be.

"Heero! Wait!" Heero didn't listen to Duo's plea. He snarled, and then hit the bed with his fist, "Damn you."

Occupants: Duo and Howard

"Duo?" Howard popped his head into Duo's hospital room and saw the still lump on the bed. The longhaired boy had dimmed his lights so Howard had to put his shades on top of his head. He crept over to the side of the bed, staring at the back of Duo, who lay on his side away from him. "Are you asleep, Duo?"

The form on the bed stirred. Howard leaned down and placed a shaky hand on his grandson's shoulder. He closed his eyes; still trying his best to get over most of the shock he had still been experiencing. He may show that he was fine on the outside, but on the inside, he had been jarred up pretty bad. His grandson, his own flesh and blood, was lying right here on the bed. He was a grandfather…

Duo finally turned over, eyes slightly open and dazed as he looked up at the shadowed figure that loomed over him.

Just by the sound of Duo's half-awake voice, jolted Howard's heart like it had never been jolted before. His body shuddered, and before he knew it, he was sitting halfway on the edge of the bed, and had taken Duo into his arms.

"It's me. I'm here."

Duo wrapped his arms around Howard even tighter, "I had a nightmare…" Duo said instantly, like it was a natural thing to say at the moment.

"You're all right. Everything will be fine." Howard felt himself on the edge of tears. And not because Duo had a bad dream. It was the moment of everything… the realization that Duo was his grandson, he was Duo's grandfather, and that Duo was suddenly seeming to act so… kid like, so open, so much his age. That also scared him. As long as he knew Duo, he had always acted so mature and grown-up. He was so much like an adult it was scary. But right now… Duo was his grandchild, and he needed him.

"I think… I-I think Heero doesn't… I mean… I think that…"

"Heero doesn't hate you."

"I know." Duo lay back when Howard moved back into a sitting position, hovering over him once more. His eyes shimmered as he looked up at Howard; smile not placed where it should be. "One minute he's telling me that he… and the next we… but then he…" Duo shook his head.

"You two had a misunderstanding?"

"I guess so. But I'm too tired to think on it right now."

"Don't worry." Howard brushed a hand across Duo's forehead. It felt hot and clammy to the touch. "Get some rest, ok? Try not to think about the fight. Think of the friendship you have with Heero. Think of how he cares about you. Didn't he tell you his feelings?"

Duo blinked, "Well… he said he liked me." he stared at his grandpa in bewilderment, "You don't mean…"

Howard nodded, small smile creeping on his face, "I do. I'm sure that you two will get this little mess taken care of. And when you do, I will be the first to congratulate you two. And when you get better, I'm taking you out for ice cream and then we're going to the zoo. Doesn't that sound like fun?"

Duo nodded, "Yeah. It does." And he meant it, whole-heartedly. His smile found its place.
