[part four]

Duo frowned.

This wasn’t going well.

He pressed the fingertips of his thumb and his index to the livid purple Claim-marks on Heero’s neck to wake him up.

“Heero,” he whispered. “It’s me, Duo. Wake up.”

The boy groaned softly and opened his eyes.

“Now, kiddo, don’t faint on me again,” he said quickly as he saw Heero’s eyes widen in realization. “Let me explain.”

“Explain what?” Heero grunted. “You’re Saturn and you started to Claim me. That’s all I need to know. Unless, of course, there’s something you haven’t told me, like the fact about you being a bastard.”

“Don’t get smartass on me, chickadee. I’ve been through more lifetimes that I can count on both hands.” Duo fingered the other of two chains round his neck, his mark of Saturn. It was a plain iron ornament, twisted and wrought to form the strange ‘h’ that was the shape of Saturn’s power sign.

Heero glared at him.

“Hey! Don’t look at me that way! It’s not my fault you Drank me!” Duo said indignantly, crossing his arms and sticking his nose in the air.

“Well, I was hungry, godsdammit, and you were the only person I could find.”

“There’s a reason I keep chickens in the refrigerator, you know,” Duo said sourly. “They’re not exactly upper class cuisine, but they sate the Hunger.”

“And you tell me that now.”

“How the hell was I supposed to know you were a half-blood?! And that’s my sign you’ve got there on your neck, mister, so it’d be best to cooperate and not get bitchy.” Duo flicked his fingers absently and an invisible collar tightened warningly around Heero’s neck.

Heero’s brow furrowed and he swung his legs off the side of the bed. He wasn’t wearing the purple Claim-robes that marked him as Saturn’s, rather he was clothed in his usual spandex-and-tank-top.“What are we going to do about Relena now, what with her being Venus and all?”

Duo grinned. “Oh, you don’t have to worry about that. I’ll kill her soon enough.”

The spandex-clad boy’s eyes sparked with forbidden pleasure. “But she’s essential for peace, Duo, you can’t kill her just for trying to Take me away from you.”

Duo’s grin widened, growing evil. “Oh, but she’s just doing that to fool you. She’s not really that important. You could have killed her when you met her and it wouldn’t have made a difference. Besides, I’m very protective of my Claim.”

Heero’s eyes widened. “You mean to tell me that I’ve been protecting her all this time for nothing?!”

Duo’s grimace turned into a scowl. “No. See, although she’s a good-for-nothing little shit, everyone thinks she’s important. So if someone killed her, everyone would panic.”

The other boy’s face fell. Well, as much as it could, being that he was Heero. Suddenly, he lifted his head and sniffed the air. “Do you smell that?”

Duo’s eyes narrowed. “Venus.”

“She’s here? Now?”

Duo nodded sharply. “She doesn’t know I’m here and it’s best she didn’t. I’ll go.” The vampyre’s eyes flashed and he disappeared, a puff of purple smoke and a twinkling of Saturn’s sign, the only inkling he wasn’t standing on the apartment’s carpet ten seconds before.

There was a knock on the door. A firm, businesslike one, not like the hesitant, soft knocks that usually accompanied Relena.

Heero opened the door, hearing the tiny click as the lock was disengaged. Relena—Venus—stood in the doorway.

Her eyes flashed.

“See if Saturn can keep you away from me now, the bastard,” she said, then grabbed his face in both hands and kissed him. Hard.

The half-blood was so shocked that he didn’t object when the girl drew something in his palm. She broke away from the kiss and smiled. “Good luck,” she said, then walked down the hall, hips swaying exaggeratedly

Heero looked down at his palm to see what Venus had drawn and it took several seconds to register what it was.

A pentagram.
