Ordinary Day
By: Jim Morrison.

Heero sat at the kitchen table of their latest safe-house and as usual, was typing at his accustomed pace. Quatre was sitting near-by, his nose buried in a book and a cup of tea sat at his elbow. Trowa sat across from them, totally engrossed in the comic book before him. Wu-fei was in the front room, practicing his sword techniques since he couldn't do it outside due to the snow.

Everyone was accounted for. Except for one loud, North American pilot. Heero abruptly stopped typing when he realized that the constant background chatter that he was so accustomed to hearing was missing. In fact, he noticed as he raised his head and looked around the room, Duo wasn't anywhere to be seen.

"Heero? Is something wrong?" Quatre asked, noticing that the familiar clacking noise of keys being struck had stopped completely. Heero frowned at Quatre.

"I don't know. It seems too quiet." Heero replied as he massaged his cramped fingers.

"Also, where's Duo?" He asked, hoping that he wasn't being overtly obvious in his concern for the violet-eyed elf that had been invading his thoughts more and more frequently.

"I don't know, to tell you the truth." Quatre admitted, smothering a smile when he saw the quick look of concern flash in Heero's eyes. Trowa finally looked up from his comic.

"I think he said he was going to go down to the pond and watch the kids play on the pond in Hinton."

He put in helpfully. Heero rubbed his neck when he heard this, the concern back on his face.

Trowa caught Quatre's eye and exchanged a knowing smile before returning to his comic.

Heero shook his head and looked at the clock on the wall before standing up.

"I'm going to fetch him. It's late and Oz troops may be patrolling the area." He announced as he stood up and went to his room to change. Trowa and Quatre shook their heads.

"He's really got it bad for Duo, doesn't he?" Trowa asked as he looked at the clock.

"It's only five o'clock. It's just dark because we're so far north." Quatre told him.

Trowa laughed softly. "He's definitely got the hots for Maxwell if he's going to fetch him."

++ Heero shivered as he trudged towards the frozen pond. Although he was wearing warm clothing and boots, the cold still made itself known. He hated the cold. Hated it with a passion.

"What are you doing, idiot?" He asked himself for the thousandth time as he came closer to the pond. He really didn't have to fetch Duo. The braided twit could take care of himself. He was a big boy and had lived most of his life on the nasty streets of L2 and had the skills to prove it.

But Heero couldn't help but to feel a little over-protective of the violet-eyed pilot after he had been captured by Oz and given a fairly good beating. Even though he had managed to rescue him and get him to safety, his stomach still clenched in remembered anger at the bruises and broken ribs the other pilot had sustained at the hands of Oz. He shook his head.

"Argh." He muttered disgustedly as shouts and yells floated over to him the closer he came to the pond. At first, He thought that there was a fight going on and he thought about pulling his gun out and being ready in case something more serious would happen. He rejected the idea when he heard a familiar voice screeching louder than the rest.

"YEAAHHH!! ALRIGHT! SCORE! SCORE!" Heero smiled to himself as he followed the sound of the voice. He sighed and shook his head in silent amusement. Only Duo would get excited about a kid's hockey game. He finally found him sitting on a log with his feet on the smooth surface of the ice. He was wearing a dark-orange and black Board Doktor jacket along with his traditional black pants and Docs. A silly Peruvian hat with a large crown and ear-flaps sat on his head and his mittened hands were wrapped around a mug that let out a strong and spicy scent into the chilly winter evening.

"Great shot, Billy!" Duo cheered the kid that had just scored the goal and Heero had to hide his grin from the excited American as he slipped in from the shadows and sat down beside him.

//I've got a smile on my face and I've got four walls around me
I've got the sun in the sky, all the water surrounds me//

=Whoo! Boy! It's been ages since I've had a chance to get out and enjoy just being outside= Duo thought to himself as he watched the little kids play as if NHL scouts were out there waiting to take them to big leagues. He shook his head and smiled as Billy, the goal-scorer, zoomed past him while deftly out-manouvering his opponents.

Damn! The kid was good!

=I wonder what it would be like to have goals and ambitions apart from not getting blown up and getting a certain Japanese git to pay some positive attention to me, for once.= Duo thought a bit wistfully as he watched the kids have yet another skirmish with the puck. So deep in his thoughts about what could have been and what could be; he didn't notice the blue-clad person sit down next to him and begin to pretend to watch the game.

<Does he know how he looks like with that smile on his face? How sweet it looks when he's drawing fairy-castles in the air? Does he know how much he means to all of us? To me.> Although he hated to spoil Duo's revelries, he knew that he would have to get his attention sooner or later. So he decided the best way to do it would be sooner.

"Having fun, Duo?" Heero's voice cut into his thoughts, making him jump about a foot in the air and nearly slide off the log and onto the ice in the process. That didn't happen, luckily, because Heero had been prepared for his reaction and caught him before anything serious happened.

"Fuck, Heero, you sure know how to scare the pants off someone!" Duo exclaimed, feeling himself get a bit red in the face from the close contact between them. =Not really close though= He reminded himself as he breathed in the fresh, sharp scent of winter from Heero's jacket.

He didn't know why he had fallen hard for the Japanese pilot. Heero was a killer who had all the charm of a frozen telephone pole. His socialization skills were nil and he was constantly threatening to kill him. He should have turned the opposite direction and ran as fast as he could when he started taking more and more notice of the pilot. But he hadn't. He had allowed himself to fall in love with him. And the emotion was getting stronger and stronger. He also was beginning to think that there could be something between them now that Heero was becoming nicer and more considerate toward him.

That was puzzling. Ever since Quatre had rescued him from Oz, Heero had been changing. At times, he was positive that Heero had been giving him looks of like? Love? He didn't know. But he knew for sure that he was responding to the surreptitious touches and glances that the Japanese boy was sending his way. =Heero has changed. He's nicer now. He's actually close to being human. I think that he's beginning to actually feel. Agh! I don't know! It may be wishful thinking on my part.= Duo turned his thoughts off and again inhaled the tangy scent of Heero's jacket and savoured the closeness that he was sharing with the aloof and stand-offish pilot.

"You okay, Duo?" Heero finally asked, feeling a bit concerned about Duo's silence. Duo nodded, his mind unable to come up with anything remotely intelligent to say at that moment.

"I didn't hurt your ribs again, did I ?" Heero asked, his voice carrying more than a touch of concern for Duo's recent injuries. Duo shook his head. His broken ribs were pushed in the back of his mind right now, despite the ominous ache that was there, promising more pain to come later.

"Uh, no. I'm fine. Thanks for catching me, though. I really appreciate it." Duo told him. He really was thankful that he had Heero's arms around him. The simple physical contact made him feel that maybe there was some hope of getting to be more than friends with the stoic pilot. That simple and furtive hope had been the only thing that had kept him smiling even when he was hearing his bones snap under Oz soldier boots as they sought to break him.

//And I'll win now but sometimes I'll lose
I've been battered, but I'll never bruise
It's not so bad //

Heero nodded, and knew that he should perhaps let Duo go already, but he didn't really feel like giving his precious bundle up just yet. He knew he was becoming a bit obvious in his emotions towards Duo, like touching him frequently, and checking up on him whenever he was asleep, but he couldn't help it. The weeks that Duo had spent in Oz custody had broken something in him.

## Heero stood at the large bay window of the Banff Springs hotel and just stared at the large, snow-covered mountains outside. He hadn't moved and had no intention of moving until his laptop beeped or Quatre came in bearing Duo.

"Come back." He whispered to the cold mountains as he then placed his hand flat against the cold glass and tried to imagine that it was Duo's face that he was caressing. He closed his eyes.

"Why DO I miss him so much now?" He asked himself as he let his hand fall back limply to his side. He hadn't missed the others like he missed Duo. <Well,> He amended as he opened his eyes and sat down on the window-seat, angling his body to still be able to look at the mountains,< he hadn't missed him before.> It was just a gradual thing. He didn't know when it began, or what exactly triggered the emotions off. He just woke up one day and found himself desperately wanting Duo to be with him. Didn't matter where or when, he just wanted him to be there.

Didn't matter what he was doing. Either talking his ear off, playing video games or quietly listening to music while reading, he just wanted him near. He had asked himself why, as he watched Duo sleep one afternoon. He wasn't able to give an answer then.

"Hey, Heero, didja miss me?" He snapped back to the real world when he heard the voice that he had been aching to hear for weeks.

Although the voice was cheery, he could tell that Duo was in pain. It was obvious that he could barely move, much less walk out of his own volition. The way that Quatre was moving, it was also clear that the blonde boy was the one reason why Duo hadn't keeled over yet.

Duo, to put it nicely, looked like shit. His face had yellowing bruises and his eyes looked like they were bleeding. His breathing was ragged and his hand was bandaged up. Heero winced when he saw that three fingers were splinted. <Shit, Duo. Shit.> He thought as he mechanically moved to take Duo from Quatre. Picking him up, he then carried the exhausted Deathscythe pilot to the window-seat and gently set him down. Duo didn't protest. He only smiled as Heero sat down beside him. They didn't speak just then. Neither knew what to say, or how to begin.

"It's just an ordinary, Heero. Just an ordinary day." Duo finally said, and Heero laughed, despite the sudden awareness that coursed through him and the puzzling violet eyes in front of him.##

//And I say wey-hey-hey it's just an ordinary day
And it's all your state of mind
At the end of the day
you've just got to say it's all right //

"Mmmm. This is nice." His thoughts were broken off by Duo's almost purred declaration of pleasure as he took the liberty of snuggling closer to him. Heero felt his face go bright red.

"You don't mind, do you, Heero?" He asked as he looked into his face, his eyes wide and innocent looking as he spoke. =Cause I certainly wouldn't mind staying like this for as long as I can.=

Heero swallowed a few times before he trusted himself to speak. <Can he tell how much I want him to stay that way? Or is he just teasing me?>

"No. I don't mind. Go right ahead." Heero said, hoping his voice was calm enough not to betray too much information. Duo smiled. <Damn, I wonder if the boy knows what that smile does to the world at large when he really puts emotion into it.>

Duo was about to snuggle in deeper into Heero's hold when a thought stopped him. =Is he taunting me? Is he using this as a weak point that he can exploit later on? He doesn't do anything without reason. He doesn't know the meaning of kindness…Does he?=

Duo sat up and moved away from Heero in order to examine him closely. Heero shook his head.

"Have I grown a tail all of the sudden?" He asked the violet eyed boy who was giving him one heck of a funny look. Duo bit his lips, unsure if he wanted to actually tell him what he was thinking about. "I can't be nice to you without an ulterior motive?"

"No. It's not that. You've never been this nice to me before. You usually want me to go leave you alone and that I annoy you." Duo whispered as he recalled some of the times when Heero hadn't been so nice to him. Which usually consisted of Heero ignoring him, or moving to another room when Duo entered the one that he had been in.

//Janie sings on the corner, what keeps her from dying
Let them say what they want, she won't stop trying, oh you know//

Heero bit his lip. He had forgotten about all those times when he had been pretty inconsiderate of the American's feelings. At first, it was true. He really didn't want to be around Duo if he could help it. Hell, would you take a shine to someone that shot not once, but several times the first time that they met you? But as time had progressed, he realised that Duo wasn't as one dimensional as he had first perceived him to be. Or how Duo himself wanted the rest of the world to think he was. The boy had courage. And kindness. And patience, even if it wasn't easily visible. Or else why would he have spent so much time and effort to befriend him and bring him out of his soldier persona when he had the friendship of the other pilots to make up for his lack of interest?

"What's up with you Yuy? Seriously. I mean, it's nice to see you acting like you're human for once, but it's starting to scare me." Duo said in a quiet voice, his earlier emotions pushed down in favour of the fear he felt pouring over him. Heero frowned to himself.

<Fucken hell!>

//She might stumble if they push her round
She might fall, but she'll never lie down
It's not so bad - and I say //

The silence was so thick that they could cut it with a knife.

Neither boy moved from their respective spots. Everything else was forgotten as they fought to figure out what the other was thinking and feeling and what the best course of action was that either of them should take.

"Would you believe that I've fallen in love with you?" Heero finally said, shattering the preternatural stillness that had fallen between them. Duo's eyes widened as far as they could go at this simple statement from Heero. =He must be lying. Must be lying. He can't mean it! He can't mean it! He can't mean it! He CAN'T feel! How can he meant it if he can't feel!=

Duo shook his head as he opened and shut his mouth to say something, anything! But no sound was heard. =He doesn't lie. Why would he lie? His eyes aren't lying to me. Yet I can't believe him. I just can't believe him. I want to believe him. But why can't I?=

"I don't know if I can." Duo finally whispered when he finally had gained his composure under Heero's patient gaze. =He isn't angry. He looks like he's just waiting. For me?=

"Why not? I'm not lying to you, Duo. I've fallen in love with you. Don't ask me when or why it happened, but I have. I love you." Heero said in a quiet voice as he took one of Duo's limp and chilled hands and clasped it between his own.

"I don't know what to think, Heero. Or do. I mean, it's all so-mmmppphhm." Whatever Duo was going to say was cut off by Heero's soft, warm lips pressed against his. =Whoah! Oh Christ! He tastes better than I imagined!= Duo thought as his lips were caressed by Heero's tongue, then gently parted as his mouth was them explored as Heero sought to taste all of him.

//'Cause it's all right, it's all right - it's all right //

A cheer from the forgotten crowd brought them to themselves. Duo was the first one to pull away, a bright flush over his cheekbones which made the crowd hoot even louder.

"Do you think they realize that you're actually a guy?" Heero whispered as he pulled Duo into his arms so that the embarrassed American could hide his face into Heero's shoulder.

"I don't know and I don't care right now! I just want to get out of here!" Duo exclaimed in a muffled voice. Heero smiled and patted his back reassuringly.

"Let's go then." He said, leading Duo to the truck he had parked on the edge of the pond. They didn't speak until they had climbed into the vehicle, and even then it took a while for them to actually say anything that had any actual meaning.

"Did me kissing you weird you out?" Heero asked as he put the key in the ignition and began coaxing the truck to start. Duo watched him as he tried to calm the thoughts swirling about in his head. Heero waited, despite feeling like he was awaiting his death sentence to be announced.

"But I thought you and Relena had a thing going on." Duo finally managed to squeak out. Heero turned to him with a stunned look on his face. <Did I just hear that?>

"Say what?" He asked. Duo only blushed as he turned to look out the window.

"I thought that you're straight. That you secretly have the hots for Relena, that's why you let her follow you around and why you don't kill her." Duo mumbled. Heero laughed, making Duo turn and look at him in shock.

"I don't kill her because if she dies, this war will never end. She's the only hope for the universe to be at peace. I personally don't like her at all. I can't love someone that wants me to rescue her all the time. That wants me to be her strength when she should actually be finding it for herself." He shook his head. "I don't want to be anyone's prince in shining armour." He smiled. "Well, maybe yours." He fidgeted a bit in his seat. "That's only if you-" Whatever it was that he was going to add was cut off by Duo enthusiastically glomping him and giving him the deepest and roughest kiss of his short life-time.

Heero and Duo sat side by side several minutes later, Heero with Duo's braid in his hand and Duo playing with one of the messy cowlicks that adorned Heero's head. Their lips were shiny and bruised from the force of the kiss they had just shared.

"So." Heero said as he looked at Duo, who was smiling impishly. "I take it that you feel the same?" Duo's smile grew wider as he then laughed a soft and triumphant laugh.

"Do you have any doubts?" He asked the Japanese boy as he snuggled close to him.

//In this beautiful life there's always some sorrow
And it's a double edged knife, but there's always tomorrow
It's up to you now if you sink or swim,
Just keep the faith that your ship will come in
It's not so bad - and I say//

=I'm just asking because there's a war going on and you might decide that constant death is no match for the fragility of love. That maybe you still want to be free to make a choice when your life is so limited.= Duo swallowed as he watched Heero's face. =Don't lie to me.= Heero returned the smile as well as a gentle kiss on Duo's nose before he turned his attention to the icy road in front of them. Duo relaxed visibly at the gestures. <I wouldn't lie about this.>

"None. None at all." He answered as he put the truck in gear and they sped off to the safehouse they were staying at with their fellow pilots. Although he was concentrating on Driving, Duo noticed that instead of the usual dead glare he gave everything, Heero was actually smiling.

"So much for an ordinary day." Duo mused as he too began smiling.

//I've got a smile on my face and I've got four walls around me..... //
