Part 4 - Wufei's Story

Down in the hills of Hong Kong, China, many villagers were suffering from a horrible disease that was spreading around. Some called it the plague. It affected one family greatly. Wufei Chang was a poor man, who lived with his wife and her parents. He was about 23 years old, 5"6, 125 lbs., with black hair, and matching black eyes. He descended from a rich, noble family, but he gave it all up for love. When he met Meiran, he knew nothing could stand in the way of their union.

His parents, however, disapproved. They wanted him to marry a wealthy girl. He refused and was disowned. Now, he was living a life of poverty with his beautiful wife. Everything had been going great for years until something terrible had befallen the poor family. Meiran had become ill while she was bearing their first child. She was only 7 months pregnant, but she had caught a terrible disease and, now, she was faced with the fear of losing their only child.

Wufei waited outside his small house as the doctor was looking at his wife. He knew she was terribly ill, but the treatment would cost money, which he did not have. He only made a small amount of money as a teacher. He was afraid to go crawling back to his parents.

The doctor came out with a mournful statement on his face. He looked at Wufei and shook his head sadly.

"What is it, doctor?" Wufei asked worriedly.

"She's very sick. She might die. Of course, we could cure her if you moved her to one of the state of the art hospitals in Hong Kong,"the doctor said.

"Wufei," Meiran's mother cut in quickly,"you know we have no money to get Meiran to a good hospital. We're going to have to do something."

"I can ask for a raise at my job. Even though, I don't think they'll say yes. Hong Kong is going through a terrible recession right now."

"Wufei, I think you know what you have to do," Meiran's mother said as she placed her hand on Wufei's shoulder.

Wufei closed his eyes and clenched his fists tightly. As much as he didn't want to, he knew it was his only option. He couldn't back out now. He looked into the small cottage and watched as Meiran moaned silently in pain. She was suffering through the worst of fevers. Wufei tore his eyes away and nodded silently.

"Yes, I know what I have to do, but I still don't want to. I cannot let Meiran down, so I'm going to have to go crawling back to my father."

"You made a good choice, Wufei."

Wufei went inside and started getting dressed in his nice clothes. He picked up his shoulder length hair and put it back in a tight pony tail. He then put on a clean white shirt and black pants. Meiran noticed Wufei fixing himself up and attempted to sit up.

"Where are you going, Wu-chan?"she asked with a soar voice.

"I am going to talk to my father."

"What! You haven't spoken to him in 6 years! Why are you-oh, don't tell me this about the money."

"Mei-chan, calm down. The stress isn't good for you right now. Anyways, yes, this is about the money. We need it, and I'm not making enough to help you," Wufei said as he crossed the room to where Meiran was lying down. He put his arm gently on hers and kissed her on the forehead.

"Everything is going to be alright. Don't worry about it," he spoke softly."Now you lie down and rest."

With that, he left their small cottage. He sat inside his small beaten up car. He was terribly worried about seeing his father, but his concern for Meiran fueled his confidence. He resigned himself to his terrible duty and drove off to a high class part of Hong Kong (1).

He arrived within an hour's time. He wasn't sure if his car could make it back, but he made it this far. He climbed the steps of the large, expensive-looking house, complete with gold trimmings and marble statues. He knocked softy until the maid answered the door. He didn't recognize the serveant at first, but she immediately knew who he was.

"Wufei! You return after so long. Your father was mournful, but he still remain confident that you come back one day. I am most certain he will be glad. Come in," she greeted him.

"Kira, is that you? I could barely recognize you. You have changed," Wufei said surprised.

"As have you. You've grown into fine gentleman. Come this way. I will fetch your father."

Kira walked off in the other direction and Wufei sat down on an expensive looking couch. It was red in color and it had designs of lions on it. He traced out the patterns with his fingers and started to think about Meiran, which led to worry. He was snapped out of his thoughts and completely startled as he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and beheld the eyes of his own father.

"Wufei, what brings you back here after so long? Have you finally left that wench and decided to settle down with a finer woman," his father said as he stood up as straight as a board.

Wufei's fist curled tightly, and he gritted his teeth. "No, I have not left her. In fact, we are expecting a child," he said through his clenched teeth. "In fact, that is why I am here. I beg for your forgiveness father. I need your help in this time."

"I will not forgive you. You married that poor girl and dug your own hole. Now you have to crawl out of that hole yourself."

"What! I am your son! My wife is dying and so will our child."

"I don't care. You left. This distressed your mother so much that she passed away a few years ago. Did you care, then? No. You abandoned us."

"You kicked me out! I did not leave you. I love Meiran, but you couldn't see that. So you tried to force me to marry some other girl."

"Wufei, you dishonorable curr! You have brought a bad name to this family. I want you to leave my house! How dare you come crawling back after so long just to ask me for money when indeed you know you've messed up a long time ago. Now get out and never come back."

Wufei got up quietly and stomped out of his house making sure to slam the door loudly as he left. He was angry and upset. His world had just crashed all around him, and he was deftly afraid of losing his wife and their child.

He sat in his car and attempted to drive away. The car wouldn't start, and Wufei started cursing in every language he could. He frowned sligtly and was struck speechless as someone showed up at his window.

"Who are you?" Wufei asked quickly.

"Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dermail, and I am a good friend of your fathers. I couldn't help but overhear your argument. See, your father has told me a lot about you. You are finely schooled in karate, and you're not too bad with the katanas either."

"What do you want?" Wufei asked curiously.

"I'm looking for a fighter just like you. Before you say no, I must offer you a proposition. Have you heard of the Dead or Alive Tournament?"

"Yes. Everyone in China is familiar with it," Wufei answered.

"Well, I am one of the sponsors, and I would like to ask you if you would like to go fight for me-?"

"No, I will not."

"You didn't let me finish. If you fight for me, I will give you all the money you earn from fighting. You see, Treize Kushrenada offers a heavy cash prize to the winner. Usually half goes to the sponsor, and the other half goes to the fighter. You don't even have to win the the whole tournament. You get $10,000 (2) if you end up in the top ten."

"I'll do it, but you have to promise me you'll give me all the money."

"Yes, of course. So, it's a deal, then?"

"Yes. It's a deal."

Both men shook hands briefly. "You have one week to prepare. Then you leave to Tokyo," Dermail said as he walked away. Wufei nodded and walked into his broken car. As if by miracle, the car actually started. Wufei's eyes widened slightly, but he shrugged it off. He drove back to his home as quickly as he could. He wasn't sure if he should tell his family about the fight, but the more he thought about it the more worried he became.

He was near their home when his wife's father came driving the other way in his car. Meiran was in the back seat passed out. Wufei left his car quickly and ran to them. (3)

"What happened?" he yelled.

"We have to get Meiran to the hospital quick. She collapsed. Get in quickly!"Meiran's mother yelled.

He got in quickly and sat in the back cradling his wife's head on his lap.

"What happened with you and your father?" Meiran's father asked.

"He..he...he said 'yes'. He'll give me the money, but I have to leave town in a week with him on a business trip. It's kind of like a 'get to know each other' trip. I know it's terribly inconvenient, but I have to go if I want to instill a strong relationship with my father so he can help us. Tell the hospitals to give her the best treatment. I'll have the money for her soon enough."

"That's great! Meiran will be happy to hear it! Things are starting to look up," Meiran's mother said joyously.

Wufei gave a forced smile. He knew it was wrong to lie, but he knew they would be too worried if he told them he was going to fight. Sure, it's been a while, but he was very confident in his abilities. He had several medals to prove it. He knew he would have to do this for his wife and their child.
